Intuitive eating is about learning to eat when we are hungry, stop when we are full, and eat what our body and mind is craving.
Many of us are out of touch with our natural appetite. We may have restricted our food in some way in the past (even if we didn't refer to it as a "diet"). We might even be a chronic dieter, where we have either viewed ourselves as being "on a diet" or "off a diet" for years with no in-between.
There is pressure in society for people's bodies to look leaner. It is also assumed that leaner means healthier. On top of this, there is the belief that our body weight is largely in our control and that we have failed in some way if we haven't kept our weight to a particular level.
Using a number of techniques, I help people to stop their fight with food and to concentrate on the things that are really important to them. Sometimes this involves facing feelings that people might not have been aware of before. I also help people to start to feel better about how they look and to shift their goal to healthy behaviours rather than weight loss.
It is not always an easy journey, but it's amazing to see how we can flourish when we are no longer plagued with anxious thoughts about food and weight.
